I finally got chance to pop into Off The Wheaten Track for a bite to eat the other Friday – it’s something that had been on my wish list ever since it had opened earlier this year! And, I cannot tell you how giddy I’d gotten myself in anticipation of my visit to this !00% gluten free deli and cheese specialist, situated in the lovely town centre of Altrincham, not too far away from where I live.
I ordered a flat white and took my time to ponder over the menu, deciding what I fancied. The homemade meat and potato pie with peas were calling, but finally I decided on the cheese and onion pie, with baked beans. This proved to be a super choice. The pie had a lovely light crust and gorgeous, perfectly flavoured filling and the homemade delicately smokey and warming baked beans were simply yum!
Loved being perched by the bench in this fab little deli, watching the world go by whilst I enjoyed my lunch (there are tables too, both upstairs and downstairs, but I had my heart set on the bench) and was struck with delight as whilst looking out of the window, I spotted a Pipers crisps van pull up – they were only delivering my FAVOURITE crisps to this very eatery!!
With all the lovely homemade gluten free cakes on display on the counter, I allowed myself to pick out two treats to take home – Parkin and carrot cake it had to be on this occasion….. an excellent choice, particularly the parkin, that I had a little cheeky piece of with my morning cuppa the following day!
Well, I have to tell you, my excitement for this place was justified. Off The Wheaten Track is a delight, it has a gorgeous ‘feel’ – thanks to the welcoming warmth from Hayley and her friendly staff – and is pure heaven for coeliac’s or anybody requiring a gluten free diet (and of course anybody else who fancies popping in, to eat in or take away, and enjoy great freshly prepared food). And whilst I never feel I miss out on my gluten free diet, the pure joy of being able to choose ANYTHING from the menu, knowing that no additional questions about cross contamination etc were needed, as the kitchen is 100% gluten free and completely safe, was just wonderful and made me so happy that I sang all the way home in the car!
So, without doing a little happy dance, I’m struggling to tell you how much I loved my visit to Off The Wheaten track. I will be calling in again very soon and cannot wait!!!
Off The Wheaten Track only opened 6 months ago, but already feels really well established, and has gained fans from all over the globe! If this deli is not in your neck of the woods, I suggest you make a little note about the place, just in case you should you ever be in the area – check out the opening times to make sure it works with your plans. I keep a list on my phone of places from all over the world that I would like to eat, stay or visit on the off chance that I may be nearby one day.
Another quick thing to mention. Off The Wheaten Track is only a few miles from Dunham Massey – a beautiful place I love to wander around, and maybe somewhere you may like to see too whilst you are visiting this very special deli!
